Program note –
The work is in 4 short movements, fairly bright in mood with strong elements of rhythm and melody.
The instrumentation gives rise to an overall transparent texture, percussive techniques being frequently employed to punctuate rhythmic patterns and define cross rhythms.
Stylistically it falls into no particular category, and is largely the product of an intuitive compositional process. The title serves to suggest images of light on water, the sun’s rays dancing on the ocean, refracted light changing colour at every moment.
It was commissioned by the Australia Ensemble, (resident at the University of N.S.W.) with the generous financial assistance of the Music Board of the Australia Council, and won the APRA (Australasian Performing Rights Assoc.) “Classical composition of the year” in 1992.
