about "Refractions at Summercloud bay"........

The work is in 4 short movements, fairly bright in mood with strong elements of rhythm & melody.

The instrumentation gives rise to an overall transparent texture, percussive techniques being frequently employed to punctuate rhythmic patterns & define cross rhythms.

Stylistically it falls into no particular category, & is largely the product of an intuitive compositional process.

The title serves to suggest images of light on water, the sun’s rays  dancing on the ocean, refracted light changing colour at every moment.

It was commissioned by the Australia Ensemble, (resident at the University of N.S.W.) with the generous financial assistance of the Music Board of the Australia Council,  & won the APRA (Australasian Performing Rights Assoc.) “Classical composition of the year” in 1992.
